Victron SmartSolar MPPT 150/70-Tr Solar Charge Controller | SCC115070211

A 70A Victron solar charge controller for 12, 24, 36, and 48V battery banks, with ultra-fast MPPT tracking, built-in Bluetooth, a VE.Direct port, and screw-terminal PV connections.

The Victron SmartSolar MPPT 150/70-Tr (part SCC115070211) charges at up to 70A from arrays of up to 150V open-circuit voltage, handling up to 4,000W of nominal PV power on a 48V bank or 1,000W at 12V. It detects 12, 24, and 48V battery banks automatically (36V is selected manually) and reaches a 98% peak efficiency without a cooling fan.

Sizing Your Array: Decoding 150/70

150V maximum PV voltage, 70A maximum charge current.

The model name gives the two numbers that matter most when you size an array. 150 is the absolute maximum PV open-circuit voltage at the coldest expected temperature, and 70 is the maximum battery charge current.

Because the charge current is capped at 70A, the usable PV power rises with battery voltage: 1,000W at 12V, 2,000W at 24V, 3,000W at 36V, and 4,000W at 48V.

Ultra-Fast MPPT Tracking

Victron’s tracking algorithm follows rapidly changing light, such as passing clouds, to keep the array at its maximum power point, and finds the optimal operating point when partial shading creates more than one power peak.

150V PV Input Headroom

Series strings let you run a higher-voltage array on smaller cables. Keep the array’s open-circuit voltage below 150V at the coldest expected temperature; charging starts once PV voltage exceeds battery voltage by 5V and continues while it stays 1V above.

Adaptive Multi-Stage Charging

Choose one of eight preprogrammed charge algorithms with the rotary switch, or define a custom profile in VictronConnect for lithium, AGM, gel, or flooded batteries. The last change made, by switch or app, takes priority.

Smart Networking and Monitoring

Bluetooth, VE.Direct, and VE.Smart networking built in.

Use the VictronConnect app over the built-in Bluetooth to configure charge settings, watch live PV and battery data, review charge history, and update firmware from a phone or tablet.

VE.Smart networking can share battery voltage, temperature, and current from a Smart Battery Sense, BMV-712, or SmartShunt for more accurate charging, and synchronizes charging across multiple SmartSolar controllers. A VE.Direct cable connects the controller to a Cerbo GX or other GX device for system control and VRM remote monitoring.

Relay, Remote Control, and Full Protection

Built-in control options and electronic protection.

A programmable relay can switch on configurable alarms and events such as battery or PV voltage, temperature, and charge state, and a remote on/off connector allows external control from a BMS or switch.

There are no dedicated load terminals; a virtual load output is available through the relay or the VE.Direct TX port with the appropriate cable. The controller is protected against PV reverse polarity, PV reverse current, output short circuit, and over-temperature, reducing its output current when it gets hot.

Design the array for your coldest morning

The 150V limit is absolute.

PV open-circuit voltage rises as temperature falls. Calculate the string’s open-circuit voltage at the lowest expected temperature and keep it below 150V, then select the charge algorithm or enter custom charge values that match the battery. For Epoch LiFePO4 batteries, follow Epoch’s current charge-voltage, charge-current, and temperature guidance for the exact model.

Frequently asked questions

Victron SmartSolar MPPT 150/70-Tr FAQs

Common questions about array sizing, battery voltages, lithium charging, monitoring, and installation.

What do the numbers 150/70 mean?

150 is the maximum PV open-circuit voltage in volts, measured at the coldest expected temperature, and 70 is the maximum battery charge current in amps.

How much solar can I connect?

Size the array so its open-circuit voltage stays below 150V at the coldest temperature and its power suits the battery voltage: about 1,000W at 12V, 2,000W at 24V, 3,000W at 36V, or 4,000W at 48V nominal PV power. The PV short-circuit current must not exceed 50A.

Does it work with 12V, 24V, and 48V batteries?

Yes. It detects 12, 24, and 48V battery banks automatically. A 36V system is also supported but must be selected manually in VictronConnect.

Can it charge Epoch LiFePO4 batteries?

Yes. Choose a suitable preset with the rotary switch or enter custom charge values in VictronConnect that match the battery manufacturer’s specification, and follow Epoch’s current charge-voltage and current guidance for your battery model.

What does Tr mean?

Tr models use screw terminals for the PV connections, while MC4 versions use MC4 connectors. The 150/70-Tr has a VE.Direct port; a separate VE.Can version of the 150/70-Tr is also available.

Does it have a load output?

No. There are no dedicated load terminals. The programmable relay or the VE.Direct TX port with the appropriate cable can be used as a virtual load output to control an external relay or device.

Can I monitor it remotely?

Locally, use VictronConnect over the built-in Bluetooth. For remote monitoring, connect the controller to a Cerbo GX or other GX device with a VE.Direct cable and view it on the VRM portal.

Can I use more than one controller?

Yes. Several SmartSolar controllers can charge the same battery bank, each with its own PV array, and VE.Smart networking can synchronize their charging and share battery voltage, temperature, and current data.

Can it be mounted outdoors?

No. The electronics are rated IP43 and the connection area IP22, so the controller must be mounted in a dry, ventilated location, vertically with the terminals facing down and protected from direct water exposure.
