Many current Epoch lithium golf cart batteries use an IP67-rated enclosure. An IP67 enclosure is designed to be dust-tight and protected against temporary water immersion under the conditions defined by the rating.

Cart-specific brackets are an important part of the system because a compact lithium battery should not be allowed to slide or bounce inside a battery tray originally designed around several heavy lead-acid batteries.
Using the wrong charger is one of the most common mistakes in a golf cart lithium conversion.
Lead-acid and LiFePO4 batteries use different charging profiles. An old lead-acid charger may use voltage targets, equalization behavior or shutoff logic that is unsuitable for a lithium battery.

Low-temperature protection is not the same as internal heating. Current golf-cart models should not be assumed to be self-heated unless the individual product specification expressly states that feature.
For carts used in cold climates, store and charge the battery according to the published temperature limits. A battery may be capable of discharging at a lower temperature than it can safely accept a charge.
Golf-cart performance is determined by more than amp-hour capacity.

Published ratings vary by model. The controller’s programmed current limit should always remain within the selected battery’s specifications.
Peak-current capability supports brief high-demand events such as hard acceleration, starting on an incline or overcoming a short obstacle.
Current 36V 105Ah and 48V 65Ah and 105Ah LiMAX models publish short-duration peak-discharge capability of up to 300A for 15 seconds and 700A for two seconds.
The current 48V 150Ah and 230Ah models publish up to 500A for 15 seconds and 1,000A for two seconds. The 72V-class 105Ah kit also provides high short-duration output for compatible 72V performance systems.
Peak ratings are not continuous ratings. A controller should not be configured to demand a short-duration peak current indefinitely. Always compare both the continuous and peak requirements of the controller with the battery’s published BMS limits.
Some golf carts and aftermarket controllers use regenerative braking. During regeneration, the motor becomes a generator and sends current back toward the battery.
That means the battery must be able to accept not only charger current but also short bursts of regenerative current. A battery with insufficient regen capability may reach a charge-protection limit during hard braking or a long downhill descent.
Epoch publishes model-specific peak charge and regenerative-current limits. Current models range from approximately 300A for 15 seconds on selected 36V and 48V packs to 500A for 15 seconds on selected higher-output 48V and 72V systems.
Correct controller programming remains essential. Regenerative current must stay within the battery’s charge limits, especially when the battery is near full charge or operating near a temperature limit.
Removing hundreds of pounds of lead-acid battery weight can improve more than acceleration.
A lighter battery system can reduce the work required from the motor on hills, improve steering response, change braking feel and reduce the load placed on tires, wheel bearings and suspension components.
For example, current Epoch 36V 105Ah and 48V 105Ah LiMAX batteries weigh approximately 81 and 99 pounds respectively. Actual lead-acid weight savings depend on the number, size and type of batteries being removed.
Weight reduction does not replace good suspension, brakes or tires. A modified or high-speed cart should still be inspected as a complete vehicle.
