LiFePO4 basics, choosing a series, battery life and care.

What is a LiFePO4 battery, and why does Epoch use that chemistry?

LiFePO4 stands for lithium iron phosphate, the chemistry inside every Epoch battery. It is chosen for deep-cycle work because it holds its voltage under load, tolerates thousands of charge cycles and stays chemically stable at the temperatures a battery actually sees in a boat, a camper or a garage. There is no liquid electrolyte to leak and no watering, corrosion checks or terminal cleaning to keep up with.

How long does an Epoch lithium battery last?

Cycle life is rated per model, not for the range as a whole. Current Epoch batteries are rated from 3,500+ to 6,000+ cycles under each model's specified depth of discharge and test conditions, and most fall between 3,500+ and 4,500+. At one full cycle a day that is more than ten years of daily use. The rating for a given model is on its product page and in the comparison table of its collection, with the datasheet under Datasheets on the resources page.

How do Epoch lithium batteries compare with lead-acid?

Against the lead-acid bank they replace, Epoch batteries deliver about twice the usable capacity at roughly half the weight, hold a steady voltage while they discharge instead of sagging, charge faster and need no maintenance. You can use the battery's full rated capacity because the built-in battery management system stops the discharge before the cells can be harmed, where a lead-acid battery is usually kept above half to protect its plates.

Link to this answer: How do Epoch lithium batteries compare with lead-acid?

What does the built-in BMS do?

Every Epoch battery has a battery management system (BMS) that watches the cells and disconnects the battery before a fault can damage them: overcharge, over-discharge, overcurrent, short circuit and over-temperature, plus low-temperature charge protection that blocks charging below freezing. When it trips, the battery goes into protection mode and comes back once the condition clears.

Which Epoch series is right for me?

The series differ in features and price, not in chemistry:

  • Elite Series (V2): internal heating, Bluetooth and communication with Victron equipment, for the most demanding systems.
  • Pro Series: dual-purpose batteries that crank an engine and run house loads, with their own app.
  • Essential Series: Bluetooth monitoring and heated options at a lower price.
  • Big Box Series: large-format, high-capacity batteries for big storage needs.
  • Eco Series: the value line, with a smart BMS, IP54 protection and a 4,500+ cycle rating.
  • GC2 and LiMax: golf cart modules and kits.

Are Epoch batteries waterproof?

Epoch batteries have sealed enclosures rated from IP54 to IP67, depending on the model; the rating is on each product page and in the comparison table of its collection. An IP67 model, such as the Elite Series 12V 460Ah, is protected against dust and temporary immersion, which is what a bilge or an open deck calls for. No battery should be run submerged or with its terminals under water.

Link to this answer: Are Epoch batteries waterproof?

Can I mount an Epoch battery on its side?

Generally yes. LiFePO4 cells have no liquid electrolyte, so there is nothing to leak or spill when the battery lies on its side. Keep the terminals clear of anything conductive, strap the battery down so it cannot move, and leave the clearance the manual asks for. If your model's manual specifies an orientation, follow it; the manuals are under User Manuals on the resources page.

Link to this answer: Can I mount an Epoch battery on its side?

Do lithium batteries need ventilation?

A LiFePO4 battery does not vent gas during normal charging the way a flooded lead-acid battery does, so it does not need the vented battery box that lead-acid installations require. It still needs airflow to shed heat and the clearance its manual specifies, and a heated model needs room around it to warm evenly. Do not install any battery in a sealed compartment that traps heat.

See the Safety & Certifications guides for installation safety.

How should I store my battery over the off-season?

Charge the battery to roughly half to three-quarters full, disconnect it from every load and charger (a small standby draw will empty it over months), and store it somewhere cool and dry. Check it every few months with the app or a voltmeter and top it up if it has dropped. Do not leave a lithium battery flat over winter: a deeply discharged battery can fall below the level at which the BMS will accept a charge. Your model's manual gives the exact storage voltage.

Is it OK to mount my epoch batteries on their side?

It is generally acceptable to position lithium batteries on their sides because lithium-ion batteries do not have any liquid electrolyte that can leak out. Unlike traditional lead-acid batteries, which contain liquid electrolytes and must be kept upright to prevent spills, lithium-ion batteries use a solid or gel-like electrolyte. This means they can be oriented in different positions without any risk of electrolyte leakage, making them more versatile in terms of installation and use. However, it’s still essential to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for safe handling and installation to ensure optimal performance and safety.

What are the most common configurations to wire my epoch batteries?

The most common ways to wire Epoch batteries depend on the specific application and desired configuration. However, some typical wiring configurations include:

  • Series Connection: Connecting multiple Epoch batteries in series increases the total voltage while maintaining the same capacity. Positive terminals are connected to negative terminals sequentially, with the final output being taken from the remaining positive and negative terminals. This configuration is commonly used to achieve higher voltage for applications requiring increased power.
  • Parallel Connection: Connecting Epoch batteries in parallel increases the total capacity while maintaining the same voltage. Positive terminals are connected to positive terminals, and negative terminals are connected to negative terminals. This configuration is often employed to extend runtime or increase the available capacity without changing the voltage.
  • Ultimately, the wiring configuration will depend on factors such as the voltage and capacity requirements of the application, available space, and desired performance characteristics. It's essential to carefully plan and execute the wiring according to manufacturer guidelines and industry best practices to ensure safe and efficient operation

Golf Cart Batteries

Kits, voltages, range and chargers for 36V, 48V and 72V carts.

Which voltage lithium golf cart battery do I need: 36V, 48V or 72V?

Match the voltage of the pack already in the cart. Add up the voltages printed on the existing batteries (six 8-volt batteries, for example, make a 48V system) or check the cart's controller and charger, which are built for one system voltage. Epoch sells lithium batteries and complete kits for 36V, 48V and 72V carts.

The Golf Cart Battery Kit Finder narrows the choice to the kits that fit your cart.

Link to this answer: Which voltage lithium golf cart battery do I need: 36V, 48V or 72V?

What comes in a golf cart conversion kit?

A conversion kit bundles the lithium battery with a matching charger and the hardware needed to install it in place of the lead-acid pack. Mounting brackets are available for Club Car and EZGO carts and charging port plugs for Yamaha carts, so the battery sits in the existing tray and the charger plugs into the cart's port. Most models are also sold battery-only for owners who already have a lithium charger and hardware.

Link to this answer: What comes in a golf cart conversion kit?

How far will a lithium golf cart battery go on a charge?

Range depends on the battery's capacity, the cart's weight and passengers, the terrain and how fast you drive. A higher amp-hour battery stores more energy and goes further: a 48V 160Ah kit will outlast a 48V 105Ah kit on the same course. The Golf Cart Range Estimator gives an estimate for your cart and battery.

Link to this answer: How far will a lithium golf cart battery go on a charge?

Can I keep using my golf cart's lead-acid charger with a lithium battery?

Usually not. A charger installed for a lead-acid pack should not be assumed compatible with a lithium conversion, even when both are described as 36V or 48V: it needs a lithium charge profile at the right voltage, and lead-acid chargers are only suitable when they are programmable for one. Epoch golf cart kits include a matching lithium charger, and 36V and 48V chargers are sold separately.

How do I power my cart's 12V lights and accessories from a 48V lithium battery?

Use a dedicated 48V-to-12V voltage reducer rather than tapping one battery or part of the pack. With a lead-acid pack, accessories were often wired across a single 12V section, which drains those cells unevenly; a single lithium battery has no 12V section to tap. A reducer feeds the accessories from the full 48V and keeps the battery balanced. Reducers and other install parts are in Accessories.

Marine & Trolling Motor

Trolling motor, house and cranking batteries for boats.

Which lithium battery do I need for my trolling motor?

Match the motor's voltage. Trolling motors run on 12V, 24V or 36V, so you either use one battery of that voltage or wire 12V batteries in series to reach it: two for 24V, three for 36V. Epoch makes single 24V and 36V batteries, which save the wiring and the weight of a bank. Then choose the capacity for the runtime you want.

See the trolling motor battery buying guide and the trolling motor batteries.

Link to this answer: Which lithium battery do I need for my trolling motor?

How long will a lithium trolling motor battery run?

Runtime is the battery's capacity divided by the motor's current draw, and the draw depends on how much thrust you use. A motor at full power draws several times what it draws at trolling speed, so a day of fishing is mostly low draw with bursts of high. The guide Trolling motor lithium battery run-time works through the calculation for common motors and capacities.

Can an Epoch lithium battery start my outboard?

Only a dual-purpose model rated for cranking. The marine starting batteries, such as the Pro Series dual-purpose batteries, the 12V 120Ah Group 27 and 12V 300Ah Group 8D dual-purpose batteries and the 12V 172Ah Essential Series dual-purpose battery, deliver the burst current an engine start needs and then serve house loads. A deep-cycle-only battery is built for steady loads, not engine starting, and should not be used as a starting battery.

Link to this answer: Can an Epoch lithium battery start my outboard?

What is the difference between a house battery and a starting battery?

A starting battery delivers a large current for a few seconds to crank the engine and is then recharged by the alternator. A house battery delivers a modest current for hours to run electronics, lights, livewell pumps and refrigeration, and is discharged deeply and recharged daily. Epoch's house batteries are deep-cycle models; the dual-purpose models do both jobs in one battery.

Link to this answer: What is the difference between a house battery and a starting battery?

Can my outboard's alternator charge a lithium battery?

An outboard's charging circuit was designed around a lead-acid battery, and a lithium bank will accept whatever current it offers, which can overwork it. The safe arrangement is a DC-DC charger between the engine's charging circuit and the lithium bank: it limits the current, applies a lithium charge profile and protects both sides. Epoch sells DC-DC chargers, and the Charging & Inverters guides explain alternator charging.

Link to this answer: Can my outboard's alternator charge a lithium battery?

What size lithium battery does a fish finder need?

It depends on the unit's draw and how long you fish. A small unit runs all day on a compact 12V battery; large multi-screen setups with sonar and live imaging need more capacity. The fish finder battery guide works through the numbers, and the fish finder batteries are sized for electronics.

Will an Epoch lithium battery fit my boat's battery tray?

Epoch batteries come in standard case sizes, including Group 24, Group 27, Group 31 and 8D, so many models drop into the tray the lead-acid battery came out of. Each product page lists the battery's dimensions and weight; compare them with your tray and hold-down before ordering, and remember the lithium battery will be lighter than what it replaces.

How should I charge and maintain my 12-volt batteries for trolling motors, electronics, and other applications to ensure optimal performance and safety?

For optimal performance and safety when using 12-volt batteries with trolling motors, electronics, or any application requiring regular charging, follow these guidelines:

For General Use:

- Charging Recommendations: Utilize an Epoch charger or a similar quality charger. During the charging process, you may receive a "High Voltage" or "Fully Charged" alert through the app. This indicates that the battery is fully charged and is not a cause for alarm.

- Maximum Charge Voltage: Although the maximum charge voltage is specified as 14.6 volts, the actual voltage at which the battery is considered fully charged may be lower. The Battery Management System (BMS) determines the fully charged state based on several parameters, with voltage being just one of them. Once fully charged, the charge MOSFETs will disengage to prevent overcharging, as commanded by the BMS. Alternatively, the charger may stop the charge if it detects that the battery is full, and no BMS warning will be displayed. In either scenario, the battery is ready for use.

For Use with Victron Communications, Alternator Charging, or Solar Charging:

- Maximum Charge Voltage: Set a lower maximum charge voltage of 13.8 or 13.9 volts to ensure stable operation and to prevent nuisance codes on the Cerbo GX and unintentional disconnections of charge MOSFETs. Disconnections during direct alternator charging may cause voltage spikes harmful to sensitive electronics in your DC system.

- System Considerations: It's crucial for the user or installer to thoroughly evaluate the operational aspects, system configuration, and programming of the electrical installation to avoid damage. Epoch is not liable for damages resulting from incorrect system design or installation.

- Float Voltage: Adjust the float voltage to 13.4 or 13.5 volts. In systems with constant loads (e.g., lighting, fans), the charger in float mode should supply most, if not all, of the current needed for these loads while maintaining the battery voltage at the set float level. The effectiveness of this operation is influenced by the charger's capacity, float mode voltage setting, and the total load.

- Solar Charging Considerations: The ability of the charger to maintain the batteries during solar charging will vary throughout the day with the available sunlight.

Initial Use and Battery Balancing:

- Initial Alarms: Early cell overvoltage or "High Volt/Batt Full" alarms during the first few charge cycles are normal and should not be a cause for concern. These alarms usually resolve after a few charge/discharge cycles.

- Initial Charging Recommendation: To aid in the balancing of the cells, it is recommended to initially charge the battery at a 0.05C rate (5 amps per 100 Ah of battery capacity). Perform this initial charge in a warm environment to avoid activating the battery's heating system.

Specific Parameters for the 460AH Battery:

- The charge MOSFETs will disconnect if the voltage exceeds 14 volts, the charge current drops below 3.6 amps, and these conditions persist for more than 10 seconds.

- Cell balancing starts when the battery voltage reaches 13.35 volts with a cell deviation of 0.050 volts.

By adhering to these guidelines, you can ensure safe and efficient operation of your 12-volt battery systems in various applications.

How do I properly install waterproof connectors on a 460AH battery to ensure a secure and reliable connection?

For installing waterproof connectors on a 460AH battery, follow these steps to ensure a secure and reliable connection, minimizing the risk of damage from improper handling:

1. Hold the Connector: Start by holding the unplugged connector in one hand.

2. Loosen the Gland Nut: Loosen the gland nut on the backshell just enough that the cable can freely slide back and forth through the backshell and cap assembly.

3. Slide the Cable: Pull enough cable through so that you can comfortably plug the connector into the battery.

4. Connect to the Battery: While applying very slight pressure on the cable towards the battery connector, gently slide the connector assembly onto the battery port. Proceed to screw down the cap securely but without overtightening.

5. Tighten the Gland Nut: After the connector is in place, tighten the backshell gland nut to secure the cable. Again, ensure it's tight but avoid overtightening to prevent damage.

6. Ensure Adequate Strain Relief: Make sure the communication cable is adequately clamped to nearby structures to provide strain relief. This helps prevent any pulling or stress on the connector itself.

7. Proper Cable Routing: Ensure the cable is routed properly to avoid sharp bends close to the plug, which could damage the cable or compromise the connection.

These steps are designed to protect the integrity of the waterproof connector and ensure a long-lasting, secure connection for your 460AH battery. Proper installation helps prevent issues related to side forces or pull-out forces, ensuring your battery operates efficiently and safely.

RV, Van & Camper

Sizing a bank, converters, alternator charging and cold weather.

What size lithium battery do I need for my RV?

Most RVs need 100Ah to 200Ah of lithium capacity for light use, 200Ah to 300Ah for moderate use, and 300Ah, 400Ah, 460Ah or more for off-grid, solar and inverter-heavy setups. The right figure depends on how much energy you use in a day, which appliances you run, whether you use an inverter and how long you want to stay off-grid. The RV battery sizing guide shows how to add up your daily use.

Link to this answer: What size lithium battery do I need for my RV?

Will my RV's converter charge a lithium battery?

Only if it has a lithium charge profile. A LiFePO4 battery wants a constant-current stage followed by a short absorption at a lithium-appropriate voltage and no float or equalization stage, and many converters and inverter-chargers built for lead-acid never reach the right voltage or hold a float the battery does not need. Check your converter's settings for a lithium mode; otherwise replace it with a lithium-capable unit. The RV buyer's guide covers converter and inverter compatibility.

Link to this answer: Will my RV's converter charge a lithium battery?

Can I charge the battery from my vehicle's alternator while driving?

Yes, through a DC-DC charger. A lithium bank connected straight to an alternator will draw as much current as the alternator can give, which can overheat it. A DC-DC charger between the two limits the current to what the alternator can supply continuously and charges the battery with a lithium profile. Epoch stocks Victron Orion DC-DC chargers and its own DC-DC chargers.

Link to this answer: Can I charge the battery from my vehicle's alternator while driving?

Do I need a heated lithium battery for winter camping?

If you will charge below freezing, yes. LiFePO4 cells must not be charged below 0 °C (32 °F), and every Epoch battery's BMS blocks charging until the cells are warm enough. A self-heating model uses charging power to warm its cells first, so it can charge from solar, the converter or the alternator on a freezing morning. Discharging is not affected the same way, so a non-heated battery still runs the furnace overnight; it just will not take a charge until it warms. Browse the heated RV batteries.

Link to this answer: Do I need a heated lithium battery for winter camping?

Can I run my RV air conditioner on lithium batteries?

With enough capacity and an inverter sized for it, yes, but an air conditioner is the largest load in an RV and empties a small bank quickly. Large inverter loads are also more efficient on a 24V or 48V system, which halves or quarters the current a 12V bank would carry through its cables. Before planning on it, size the bank with the RV buyer's guide or contact support.

Link to this answer: Can I run my RV air conditioner on lithium batteries?

Do Epoch batteries work with Victron equipment?

Every Epoch battery works with Victron chargers, inverters and solar controllers set to a lithium profile. The Elite Series V2 batteries go further: they communicate directly with Victron GX devices, so the system runs with the battery's own data in place of a shunt and the charging equipment follows the BMS. Epoch sells Victron Energy components alongside the batteries.

Link to this answer: Do Epoch batteries work with Victron equipment?

Can I mix a lithium battery with my existing lead-acid batteries?

Not in the same bank. The two chemistries charge to different voltages and discharge along different curves, so wired together one is always overcharged or under-used and the lithium battery's BMS ends up cycling. Replace the whole bank, or keep the lead-acid batteries in a separate bank with its own charging. The same applies to mixing lithium models of different capacity or age in one bank.

Charging & Chargers

Charge profiles, existing chargers, charging speed and storage.

Do I need a special charger for my Epoch LiFePO4 battery?

Yes. To reach a full charge and get the battery's full service life, use a charger with a dedicated lithium (LiFePO4) charge profile at the battery's voltage: a 12V charger for a 12V battery, and 24V, 36V and 48V chargers for those systems. Epoch's own LiFePO4 chargers are matched to its batteries, and the recommended charge voltages for your model are in its user manual.

Can I use the charger I already have with a LiFePO4 battery?

Only when its output voltage, current, charging stages and any automatic functions match what your battery's manual specifies. A lead-acid charger is generally not appropriate unless it is programmable for a lithium profile. If you are not sure, contact support with the battery model, the charger model, its output voltage range, its amperage and its charging stages, and the team will tell you whether it is safe to use.

How fast can I charge an Epoch lithium battery?

Up to the maximum charge current on the model's datasheet, which is what the BMS allows. A larger charger shortens the charge time up to that limit; a 12V 50A charger, for example, fills a 12V battery in a fraction of the time a 15A charger takes. Above the limit the BMS steps in, so there is no benefit to a bigger charger than the battery accepts. Datasheets are under Datasheets on the resources page.

Link to this answer: How fast can I charge an Epoch lithium battery?

Can I charge a lithium battery below freezing?

Not unless it heats itself. Charging LiFePO4 cells below 0 °C (32 °F) damages them, so every Epoch battery's BMS has low-temperature charge protection that refuses a charge until the cells warm up. Self-heating models warm their cells with charging power first and then charge normally. If a battery will not charge on a cold morning, warming it is usually all that is needed.

Link to this answer: Can I charge a lithium battery below freezing?

Can I leave a lithium battery connected to the charger?

A charger with a proper lithium profile stops when the battery is full, so leaving it connected between uses is fine. For longer storage it is better to disconnect the charger and store the battery partly charged, since a lithium battery does not need to be held at full charge and is happiest stored below it. Read Leaving lithium batteries connected to chargers: what happens?

Link to this answer: Can I leave a lithium battery connected to the charger?

Why won't my lithium battery charge to 100%, or why does it slow down near full?

Slowing near the top is normal: the charger drops its current during the absorption stage while the BMS balances the cells. Stopping short of 100% usually means the charger's absorption voltage is set below what the battery needs, or the reading is the app's estimate drifting from the true state of charge. The guides LiFePO4 battery not charging to 100%? and LiFePO4 battery charging slowly near full? cover what to check.

Installation & Wiring

Series and parallel banks, fusing, cables and inverters.

Can I wire Epoch batteries in series or parallel?

It depends on the model and its BMS. Some models allow up to four in series and four in parallel, while the large high-capacity models and the 48V models are for parallel use only. Check the limits on your battery's datasheet before wiring a bank, and follow the wiring steps in its manual. Both are on the resources page.

Do the lithium batteries in a bank need to be the same model and age?

Yes. Use batteries of the same model and capacity, bought at the same time, and charge each one fully before connecting them together so they start in balance. Batteries that differ in capacity, age or state of charge share the load unevenly, and the weakest one limits the whole bank. The guide Effects of parallel connections on LiFePO4 performance explains why.

What fuse should I use with a lithium battery?

A fuse rated for the current the battery can deliver into a short circuit. Lithium batteries have very low internal resistance and can deliver far more fault current than lead-acid, so high-capacity banks and inverter feeds call for a Class T fuse, which is rated to interrupt that current safely. Fit the fuse as close to the battery's positive terminal as the manual allows, and never replace a fuse with one of a different type or rating; a non-specified replacement fuse can void the warranty.

Why does my lithium battery shut off when I connect an inverter?

An inverter's capacitors charge in an instant when it is first connected, drawing a large inrush current that the BMS reads as a short circuit and disconnects. A pre-charge circuit, or the pre-charge resistor built into some battery switches, lets the capacitors fill slowly before the main connection is made. Read What is a pre-charge circuit?

Link to this answer: Why does my lithium battery shut off when I connect an inverter?

Why does my lithium battery turn off under a heavy load?

The BMS has hit one of its limits, usually the continuous or peak discharge current, and disconnected to protect the cells. Compare the load with the discharge rating on the datasheet: a large inverter, a winch or a high-thrust trolling motor at full power can exceed a small battery's limit on its own. Adding a battery in parallel, where the model allows it, shares the current. Read Lithium battery shuts off under load? What to check.

Link to this answer: Why does my lithium battery turn off under a heavy load?

What size battery cables should I use with a lithium battery?

Size the cables to the continuous current of the loads and the charger and to the length of the run; too thin a cable drops voltage and heats up. Your battery's manual gives the minimum cable size and terminal torque, and the System Design & Wiring guides cover bank layout. If you are planning a larger system, contact support and the team will check the design.

App & Monitoring

The Epoch apps, Bluetooth, state of charge and remote monitoring.

Which Epoch app do I use, and where do I download it?

The apps are free and depend on the battery:

All three are listed under Bluetooth App on the resources page.

Link to this answer: Which Epoch app do I use, and where do I download it?

What does the Epoch battery app show me?

Live state of charge, voltage and current, the battery's health, its temperature and, on heated models, whether the heater is running. It is the quickest way to check a battery before a trip and to confirm that a charger is actually charging.

Link to this answer: What does the Epoch battery app show me?

The Epoch app can't find my battery. What should I check?

Make sure Bluetooth is on and the phone is close to the battery, that the app has been granted the Bluetooth and nearby-device or location permissions it asks for, and that no other phone is already connected to the battery, since it pairs with one at a time. A battery that has been in storage may need to be woken with a charger before it advertises. If it still does not appear, contact support with the battery model and phone model.

Link to this answer: The Epoch app can't find my battery. What should I check?

Why do the app and my battery monitor show different percentages?

They measure differently. The app reports the BMS's estimate from inside the battery; a shunt-based monitor counts the current in and out at its own shunt. Both drift between full charges, and a LiFePO4 battery's flat voltage curve gives neither much to correct against until the battery is full or nearly empty. A full charge resynchronizes them. Read why the app and monitor differ and SOC drift explained.

Can I monitor my Epoch batteries remotely?

Yes, with the right model. V2 Elite Series batteries with Victron communications report to the Epoch Cloud app over the internet, so you can check the bank from anywhere. Pro Series batteries connect to the Pro Series communications box and 5-inch touchscreen display for whole-system monitoring on board. Bluetooth-only models are read within Bluetooth range of the phone.

Solar & Off-Grid

Solar charging, system voltage and home energy storage.

Can I charge Epoch batteries with solar panels?

Yes. Use a solar charge controller, ideally an MPPT controller, with a lithium profile set to the charge voltages in your battery's manual. Epoch stocks Victron solar charge controllers, and Elite Series V2 batteries let a Victron system follow the battery's own BMS. The Solar & Off-Grid guides cover panel sizing and controller settings.

Link to this answer: Can I charge Epoch batteries with solar panels?

How much battery and solar do I need to go off-grid?

Add up the energy your loads use in a day, then size the bank to cover it with a margin for cloudy days and the solar array to replace it in the hours of sun you get. The Solar Calculator does this for a camper, a boat, a cabin or a home from the appliances you list.

Link to this answer: How much battery and solar do I need to go off-grid?

Should my off-grid system be 12V, 24V or 48V?

The larger the inverter, the higher the voltage should be. A 12V system suits small loads and existing 12V equipment; at 2,000 to 3,000 watts and above, a 24V or 48V bank carries a fraction of the current, so cables, fuses and connections run cooler and the inverter works more efficiently. Whole-home and server-rack storage is built at 48V. Epoch makes batteries for 12V, 24V and 48V systems.

Link to this answer: Should my off-grid system be 12V, 24V or 48V?

Does Epoch make batteries for home energy storage?

Yes. The energy storage systems collection has the 48V 100Ah server-rack battery, a self-heating 3U unit that stacks with others (stacking feet are sold as an accessory) for home and commercial storage; its current certification status is on its product page. For installation, Find a Dealer lists installers offering home energy and off-grid electrical work.

Warranty

Terms, registration, claims and what is covered.

How long is the warranty on an Epoch lithium battery?

Most Epoch batteries carry an 11-year limited warranty. Coverage varies by model: Eco Series batteries carry a 6-year limited warranty and recertified batteries a 2-year limited warranty. The warranty terms page lists the full terms with a warranty-term-by-model schedule under them, and each product page states the term for that model.

Link to this answer: How long is the warranty on an Epoch lithium battery?

How do I register my battery for the warranty?

To ensure your battery is covered by the warranty, you must register it within 90 days of purchase. Visit the Product Registration Page (opens in a new tab) to complete the registration process. If the battery is not registered within this period, the warranty will begin from the manufacturer date of the battery. Proof of ownership, such as the sales receipt, is required for all warranty claims.

Link to this answer: How do I register my battery for the warranty?

Is the Epoch battery warranty transferable?

No. The warranty applies to the original purchaser of the battery and does not transfer with the battery, the boat, the cart or the vehicle it was installed in.

Link to this answer: Is the Epoch battery warranty transferable?

What does the Epoch warranty cover, and what voids it?

The warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for the term listed for your model. It does not cover damage caused by over-discharge, improper storage, misuse or physical damage, and installing a fuse other than the specified replacement can void coverage. The warranty terms give the full list of conditions and exclusions.

Link to this answer: What does the Epoch warranty cover, and what voids it?

How does coverage change over the life of the warranty?

For Eco Series and Essential Series batteries, the published terms provide repair or replacement with a comparable product at no cost for parts and labor in years one to three, a comparable product at 40 percent off retail price in years four and five, and a comparable product at 25 percent off retail price for the rest of the warranty period. Other series have their own schedules. The warranty terms govern.

Link to this answer: How does coverage change over the life of the warranty?

How do I file an Epoch warranty claim?

Open a claim on the warranty portal (opens in a new tab), where you can also track it. You will need proof of purchase and the battery's serial number. You arrange and pay for shipping the battery to Epoch; once an in-warranty battery has been inspected and repaired or replaced, Epoch pays the shipping back to you. Shipping and handling on chargers and accessories is the customer's responsibility.

No non-warranty repair is carried out until you approve it.

How do I ship a battery to Epoch for repair?

You arrange and pay for the shipment to Epoch, including packaging and insurance. Link to this answer: How do I ship a battery to Epoch for repair?

My lithium battery has shut down. What should I try before requesting a repair?

Most shutdowns are the BMS protecting the cells, not a fault. Disconnect the loads, check the temperature (a cold battery will not charge until it warms), then connect a charger with a lithium profile and watch the app: an over-discharged battery usually recovers once it accepts a charge, and an overcurrent trip clears when the load is removed. If it will not respond to a charger or the app reports an error, contact support with the model, the serial number and what the app shows.
