Battery Guides

BMS & Troubleshooting

What the battery management system does and how to read its protections.

About these guides

Every Epoch battery carries a battery management system, the electronics that watch each cell's voltage, the pack current and its temperature and disconnect the battery before any of them can cause damage. Almost every puzzling behaviour a lithium battery shows is the BMS doing its job: a battery that goes dark when an inverter starts, a bank that shuts down at startup, a charger that refuses to charge on a cold morning or a voltage that drops under a heavy load.

These guides explain each protection, the condition that trips it and the change in wiring, charging or loading that stops it recurring. They cover the low-temperature charge cut-off, over-current and short-circuit protection, over- and under-voltage limits, cell balancing and what the Bluetooth app is telling you when it reports a fault.

Start with the guide to what a BMS does; it gives the vocabulary the rest of the section uses. Then find the symptom that matches yours. If a guide does not resolve it, the support team can read the battery's log with you.

Who this is for: For owners whose battery has shut down, will not charge or is behaving unexpectedly, and who want to know what the BMS is protecting against and how to fix the cause.
