The Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/48-8A is an isolated 12V to 48V DC-DC charger engineered to charge a 48V service battery from a 12V starter battery and alternator. This 380W-class Victron 48V alternator charger combines controlled alternator loading, configurable engine shutdown detection, galvanic isolation, adaptive three-stage charging, and Bluetooth control through VictronConnect.

Solar production is not always enough to keep a 48V battery bank charged during travel, winter weather, or extended off-grid use. The Orion-Tr Smart converts energy from a 12V starter system into a programmable 48V charging profile so your RV, boat, van, or expedition vehicle can recharge its high-voltage service bank whenever the engine is running.
Controlled DC-DC charging is especially valuable with LiFePO4 batteries because their low internal resistance can demand more current than a conventional alternator can safely provide when connected directly. The Orion creates a defined charging path instead of allowing the house battery to pull uncontrolled alternator current.
The charger accepts an 8–17V input and provides a programmable 40–60V output. Configure the charge profile to the exact absorption and float values published by your 48V battery manufacturer before connecting the service bank.
The 8A output is measured on the 48V side and represents approximately 380W-class charging. Controlled output helps prevent a low-impedance lithium bank from pulling uncontrolled current directly from the vehicle alternator.
Configurable engine shutdown detection can enable charging when alternator-running conditions are detected and stop charging after engine-off conditions occur. A remote or ignition-controlled input remains available for installations that need explicit control.

The 200VDC galvanic isolation separates input, output, and case. This can help avoid unwanted ground-loop paths in mixed-voltage and marine systems, while proper bonding, grounding, fusing, and installation standards still remain essential.
Multiple Orion-Tr Smart chargers may be connected in parallel for greater output. The alternator, starter wiring, external fuses, ventilation, and battery charge acceptance must be sized for the combined input and output power.

This Orion-Tr Smart isolated model does not report input or output current in VictronConnect. Add a compatible shunt or battery monitor when precise current, energy, and state-of-charge tracking is required.
