A programmable 48V-to-12V DC-DC charger and step-down power supply for RV, marine, mobile, and off-grid systems.
The Victron Orion-Tr Smart 48/12-30A is an isolated 48V to 12V DC-DC charger that safely bridges a high-voltage house bank and conventional 12V equipment. Use it as a programmable battery charger for a 12V auxiliary or starter battery, or switch to power-supply mode to run a compatible 12V fuse block with up to 30A continuous output and 360W at 40°C.
Create a regulated 12V service rail or charge a dedicated 12V battery from a 48V bank.
Modern RV, marine, and off-grid systems often use an efficient 48V battery architecture for inverters and solar equipment while retaining 12V lights, pumps, fans, electronics, and control systems. The Orion-Tr Smart provides the correct step-down bridge between these two voltage domains without tapping cells or creating an unbalanced battery bank.
Its adjustable 10–15V output supports two distinct jobs: adaptive battery charging for a compatible 12V battery and fixed-output power-supply operation for a compatible 12V distribution panel or load.
The unit accepts a 32–70VDC input and produces a stable, programmable 10–15V output. This makes it suitable for native 48V banks that need a regulated 12V auxiliary system or a properly controlled 12V battery charge source.
In fixed-output power-supply mode, the Orion holds the configured output voltage stable as input voltage and load change within the specified range. It provides 30A continuous output at 40°C and up to 40A for 10 seconds.
Select charger mode to apply an adaptive bulk, absorption, and float profile to a compatible 12V lead-acid or LiFePO4 battery. Battery presets and custom charge values are configured through VictronConnect.
Galvanic isolation, remote control, and scalable output.
The input, output, and case are separated by 200VDC galvanic isolation. This can help avoid unwanted ground-loop paths when combining 48V and 12V systems, while correct bonding, grounding, overcurrent protection, and applicable marine or RV standards still remain essential.
Multiple Orion-Tr Smart units may be connected in parallel when more than 30A is required. The source battery, 12V bus, external fuses, conductors, ventilation, and load profile must be sized for the total combined output.
Use VictronConnect to choose charger or power-supply mode, adjust the output voltage, select or create battery presets, configure input-voltage lockout and engine shutdown detection, review status and warnings, and control the charger remotely.
Victron states that this Orion-Tr Smart isolated model does not display input or output current in the app. Add a compatible shunt or battery monitor when precise current, energy, and state-of-charge tracking is required.

Common questions about 48V-to-12V conversion, power-supply mode, battery charging, isolation, and installation.
It describes the voltage conversion. The Orion accepts power from a 48V-class source and steps it down to a programmable 12V-class output. The official input range is 32–70V, the nominal output is 12.2V, and the output can be adjusted from 10–15V.
Yes. In power-supply mode, the Orion can provide a stable adjustable output directly to a compatible 12V fuse block or load. Keep continuous demand within the 30A rating and short-duration demand within the 40A-for-10-seconds rating. Loads with larger startup surges may require a buffer battery, a second paralleled Orion, or a different power-supply design.
Yes. In charger mode, the Orion uses an adaptive bulk, absorption, and float algorithm and can be programmed for a compatible lead-acid or lithium battery. Select or create the correct battery profile in VictronConnect before connecting the 12V battery.
This isolated model keeps the input negative, output negative, and case galvanically separated with 200VDC isolation. That can help avoid unwanted ground-loop paths in marine, RV, and mixed-voltage systems. Isolation does not replace correct bonding, grounding, fusing, or professional system design.
No. This model works in the opposite direction: 48V input to 12V output. To charge a 48V battery from a 12V alternator or starter system, use the Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/48-8A model or another correctly specified 12V-to-48V charger.
Yes. Victron allows multiple Orion-Tr Smart units to be connected in parallel to increase available output. Each unit should be configured consistently, and the 48V source, 12V distribution, cables, fuses, ventilation, and load calculations must be sized for the combined power.
The charger has less than 1mA standby current when disabled and can be controlled through its remote on/off connection or VictronConnect. Configure the remote control and input-voltage lockout so the unit shuts down when the 12V system is not needed.
No. VictronConnect can configure the mode, voltage settings, battery profile, input lockout, engine detection, operating state, warnings, and measured input/output voltage, but Victron states that this Orion-Tr Smart isolated model does not display input or output current. Use a shunt or battery monitor when precise current and energy tracking is required.
No. The electronics are rated IP43 and the terminal area is IP22 when the screw terminals face downward. Victron instructs users not to operate the unit in a wet environment. Install it vertically in a dry, ventilated, heat-resistant compartment with adequate cooling clearance.
No. Victron states that the Orion-Tr Smart is not protected against reverse battery polarity and reverse-polarity damage is not repairable. Verify input and output polarity before connection and install the external fuses and cable sizes specified in the manual.
Victron's installation table lists a 20A external fuse for 48V-side wiring and a 60A external fuse for 12V-side wiring. Required conductor size depends on cable length, installation method, temperature rating, and applicable electrical standards, so follow the current manual and local code.
