The Heavy-Duty Power Hub: Decoding 12/4k/160-50
Inverter, high-output charger, and transfer switch in one integrated platform.
The model name tells you what you are getting: a native 12V battery platform, the 4k inverter stage rated at 3,400W continuous at 25°C, up to 160A of DC charging, and a 50A AC transfer switch. The combination suits 12V systems that need substantial AC output and fast recharging from shore power or a generator.
3,400W Pure Sine Wave Inverter
The inverter delivers 3,400W continuous at 25°C, 3,100W at 40°C, 2,400W at 65°C, and 6,000W peak power for up to 2 seconds. Its clean 120V sine wave output supports sensitive electronics and household-style loads when the battery bank, wiring, protection, and ventilation are correctly engineered.
The 50A Transfer Switch
A 50A transfer stage passes a 120V shore, generator, or grid source through to the connected loads while the charger replenishes the battery. The installation still needs correctly sized upstream and downstream breakers, conductors, grounding, and code-compliant distribution.
160A Smart Battery Charger
When external AC is available, the MultiPlus-II becomes a 160A 12V battery charger. Charge voltages, current limits, and algorithms are configurable, so the unit can be commissioned for the exact Epoch battery, managed BMS, and system design.
The 50/60Hz Version of the 12/4k/160-50 120V
What the 50/60Hz designation changes, and what to confirm before installation.
PMP122405110 is the 50/60Hz version of the MultiPlus-II 12/4k/160-50 120V; Victron’s dimension drawing pairs it with the 60Hz-only PMP122405100 in the same enclosure. Its inverter output defaults to 60Hz and can be configured for 50Hz, and its AC input accepts 45–65Hz rather than the 55–65Hz of the 60Hz-only version, within the same 90–140VAC input range.
Victron’s 120V technical specifications list UL 458 and CSA C22.2 No. 107.1-16 for the 12/4k/160-50, but Victron’s published UL 458 certificate does not yet name PMP122405110; if your installation, insurer, or inspector requires a specific listing, confirm it on the unit label or with Victron before purchase. It is not a UL 1741 model, and Victron’s manual notes that the grid-parallel function is neither UL 1741 nor CSA C22.2 No. 107.1 certified, so it is not a grid-interactive device. UL 458 covers vehicle and marine inverters, and many inspectors require UL 1741 for permanently wired home or building installations; confirm your authority having jurisdiction’s requirements.
Advanced Victron Energy Management
PowerAssist, intelligent load separation, and fast backup transfer.
On shore or generator power, PowerControl first reduces battery charging to keep the source within its configured current limit. If the connected loads still need more power, PowerAssist supplements the AC source with energy from the battery, then uses spare source capacity to recharge when demand falls.
AC-Out-1 backs up critical loads and transfers to inverter power in less than 20ms. AC-Out-2, rated 32A, is reserved for loads that should run only while shore, generator, or grid power is present, helping keep water heaters and other non-critical loads from draining the battery bank.
Scalable: Parallel, Split Phase, and Three Phase
Grow the power platform as system requirements expand.
Two matching units can be configured through VE.Bus for 120/240V split-phase output; to pass 240V loads through from shore or generator power, each unit’s AC input must be on one leg of a 120/240V split-phase source, so check Victron’s split-phase documentation before relying on a 120V-only supply. Up to six identical units can operate in parallel on one battery bank, and three matching units can form a three-phase system (not for delta connection).
Multi-unit systems need matching models, compatible firmware, equal DC cable lengths and cross-sections, correct VE.Bus configuration, and engineered protection. For split-phase input and L1/L2 outputs from one unit, see the 2x120V model, PMP122405210.

Frequently asked questions
Victron MultiPlus-II 12/4k/160-50 (120V 50/60Hz) FAQs
Common questions about the 50/60Hz variant, 120V and 240V output, the 160A charger, wiring, and monitoring.
What do the numbers 12/4k/160-50 mean?
12 means the unit is designed for a nominal 12V battery system; 4k identifies the inverter power class, which Victron rates at 3,400W continuous at 25°C and 6,000W peak for 2 seconds; 160 is the maximum DC battery charge current in amps; and 50 is the AC transfer-switch and maximum AC input rating in amps.
What does the 50/60Hz designation mean?
PMP122405110 is Victron’s 50/60Hz MultiPlus-II 12/4k/160-50 120V. Its inverter output defaults to 60Hz and can be configured for 50Hz, and its AC input accepts 45–65Hz. The output stays at 120V and the AC input range remains 90–140VAC, so it is not designed for 230V sources. Confirm that connected loads are rated for the selected frequency.
How is PMP122405110 different from PMP122405100?
Victron’s dimension drawing shows both part numbers in the same enclosure. PMP122405100 is the 60Hz-only version, with a 55–65Hz AC input range. PMP122405110 is the 50/60Hz version: its output can be configured for 50Hz and its AC input accepts 45–65Hz. Confirm PMP122405100’s other ratings on its own Victron datasheet. Choose PMP122405110 when the system may need 50Hz operation.
What does the 50A transfer switch mean for shore and generator power?
The 50A transfer switch lets the unit draw up to 50A from one 120V shore, generator, or grid source to supply its AC outputs and charge the battery. With one 120V AC input, it uses only one leg of a 50A 120/240V RV or marina pedestal; to use both legs, choose the 2x120V model (PMP122405210) or a two-unit split-phase system. On shore or generator power, PowerControl holds the draw within a configured input limit and PowerAssist adds battery power above it. Victron’s manual notes this model’s grid-parallel operation is not UL 1741 or CSA C22.2 No. 107.1 certified, so confirm with your authority having jurisdiction before using PowerAssist on a utility grid connection. Proper breakers, conductors, grounding, and local-code compliance are still required.
Does one MultiPlus-II provide 120V or 240V output?
One PMP122405110 provides a single 120V AC output. Two identical units configured through VE.Bus can create a 120/240V split-phase system; to pass 240V loads through from shore or generator power, the AC input must be a 120/240V split-phase source with one leg per unit, so check Victron’s split-phase documentation before relying on a 120V-only supply. Multi-unit systems need matching models and firmware and a qualified installer.
What DC fuse and battery cable size does Victron recommend?
Victron gives the DC fuse and battery cable sizes for the 12/4k/160-50 in the installation table of its current MultiPlus-II 120V manual; size to that table, then confirm against local code, ambient temperature, cable construction, routing, and run length. At 12V, a 3,400W load draws roughly 300A or more from the battery, so short, heavy cables, a correctly rated DC fuse, and a battery bank rated for that discharge current are essential.
What is the difference between AC-Out-1 and AC-Out-2?
AC-Out-1 is the inverter-backed no-break output: if the AC source fails, the inverter takes over in less than 20ms. AC-Out-2, rated 32A, is for loads that should run only while shore, generator, or grid power is present; it disconnects on battery operation and reconnects after the AC source is back.
Can the 160A charger be configured for Epoch LiFePO4 batteries?
Yes. The charge profile must be configured for the exact battery or managed-BMS system rather than left on an unsuitable factory profile, with charge current no higher than the bank’s rated maximum. Use VictronConnect or VEConfigure through a supported interface, and follow Epoch’s current charge-voltage, current-limit, temperature, and BMS-communication guidance.
Can I monitor and control this inverter from my phone?
Yes, with additional Victron hardware. A Cerbo GX or Ekrano GX enables system integration and VRM remote monitoring, and a VE.Bus Smart Dongle adds local Bluetooth monitoring and selected controls. An MK3-USB-C or MK3-USB interface and an RJ45 UTP cable are used for computer-based configuration and firmware updates.
Can this inverter be installed outdoors or in a wet compartment?
No. The enclosure is rated IP21 and the unit must be installed in a dry, ventilated location. Do not install it in wet, dusty, explosive, or poorly ventilated spaces, and keep the clearance Victron’s manual requires around the enclosure.
