The Heavy-Duty Power Hub: Decoding 12/4k/160-50 2x120V
Inverter, charger, and split-phase transfer switch in one integrated platform.
The model name tells you what you are getting: a native 12V battery platform, Victron’s 4k power class rated 3,400W continuous at 25°C, up to 160A of DC charging, and a 50A AC transfer switch. 2x120V means the unit connects to both legs of a 120/240V split-phase supply, and 50/60Hz marks the variant with a selectable output frequency.
3,400W Pure Sine Wave Inverter
The inverter delivers 3,400W continuous at 25°C, 3,100W at 40°C, 2,400W at 65°C, and 6,000W peak power for up to 2 seconds. Its clean 120V sine wave output supports sensitive electronics and typical RV, marine, and household loads when the battery bank, wiring, protection, and ventilation are correctly engineered.
The 50A Split-Phase Transfer Switch
The transfer switch passes up to 50A per leg from a 120/240V shore, generator, or grid source, so 240V loads on the output keep running while that source is connected. Correctly sized breakers, conductors, grounding, and code-compliant distribution are still required.
160A Smart Battery Charger
When external AC is available, the MultiPlus-II becomes a high-output 12V battery charger. Charge voltages, current limits, and algorithms are configurable, so the unit can be commissioned for the exact Epoch battery, managed BMS, and system design.
Split-Phase 2x120V Input and Selectable 50/60Hz Output
How the unit handles 120/240V sources, and what the 50/60Hz variant changes.
With a 120/240V split-phase source connected, such as 50A shore power or a split-phase generator, the transfer switch passes both legs through to the L1 and L2 outputs: 120V from each leg to neutral and 240V between the legs, so 240V loads can run. With a 120V-only source, or when inverting from the battery, 240V is not available; in inverter mode the unit supplies 120V to both output legs. This keeps heavy 240V loads, such as water heaters or air conditioners, off the 12V battery bank.
PMP122405210 is the 50/60Hz variant: its output is factory set to 60Hz and can be changed to 50Hz, and its AC input accepts 45–65Hz, compared with 55–65Hz on the 60Hz-only PMP122405200. Confirm that the source, connected appliances, and settings match the selected frequency before commissioning.
Advanced Victron Energy Management
PowerAssist, intelligent load separation, and fast backup transfer.
PowerControl first reduces battery charging to keep the configured AC source within its current limit. If loads on the inverter-backed circuit still need more power, PowerAssist supplements the source with battery energy, then uses spare source capacity to recharge when demand falls. PowerAssist works through the unit’s single 120V inverter, so check Victron’s 2x120V manual for how the input current limit and PowerAssist apply to L2 and 240V loads.
AC-Out-1 backs up critical loads and transfers to inverter power automatically when the AC source fails. AC-Out-2 is reserved for loads that should run only while shore, generator, or grid power is present, helping keep water heaters and other non-critical loads from draining the battery bank.
Planning for 240V Loads and System Growth
Match the system design to the loads that must stay powered.
One 2x120V unit passes 240V through from a split-phase source but does not create 240V from the battery. If 240V loads must keep running during an outage, consider a different design, such as two matching 120V MultiPlus-II units configured through VE.Bus for split phase.
Before adding units in parallel or three phase, confirm in Victron’s current 2x120V manual which multi-unit configurations this model supports. Multi-unit systems need matching models, compatible firmware, correct VE.Bus configuration, and engineered protection.

Frequently asked questions
Victron MultiPlus-II 12/4k/160-50 2x120V (50/60Hz) FAQs
Common questions about certification, the 50/60Hz variant, split-phase input, 240V loads, lithium charging, wiring, and monitoring.
What do the numbers 12/4k/160-50 mean?
12 means the unit is designed for a nominal 12V battery system; 4k is Victron’s power class, with 3,400W continuous output at 25°C; 160 is the maximum DC battery charge current in amps; and 50 is the AC transfer-switch rating, 50A per leg. 2x120V means it connects to both legs of a 120/240V split-phase supply, and 50/60Hz marks the variant with a selectable output frequency.
Is PMP122405210 UL listed?
Not confirmed for this part number. Victron lists UL 458 and CSA C22.2 No. 107.1 for some 120V MultiPlus-II models, but no listing has been confirmed for PMP122405210 specifically, and no UL 1741 listing for grid-interactive use is confirmed. Do not assume a listing from the family name alone: if an RV builder, marina, permit, or inspector requires a specific listing, check the unit’s rating label and confirm the requirement with your authority having jurisdiction before purchase.
How is PMP122405210 different from PMP122405200?
Both are MultiPlus-II 12/4k/160-50 2x120V inverter/chargers with 3,400W continuous output at 25°C, a 160A charger, and a 50A transfer switch. Victron identifies PMP122405200 as the standard 2x120V model and PMP122405210 as the 50/60Hz variant. Victron’s 2x120V manual fixes the standard models at 60Hz with a 55–65Hz AC input range, while the 50/60Hz models default to 60Hz, can be set to 50Hz, and accept 45–65Hz input. Compare both parts’ current Victron datasheets, including certification, before choosing.
Why would I choose the 2x120V version?
Choose the 2x120V model when the AC source is a 120/240V split-phase supply, such as 50A RV or marine shore power or a split-phase generator, and some loads need 240V while that source is connected. If the system has only 120V sources and loads, the single-leg 120V MultiPlus-II 12/4k/160-50 (PMP122405110) may be the simpler choice.
Does one MultiPlus-II provide 120V or 240V output?
This 2x120V model passes 240V through only while connected to a 120/240V split-phase source. With a 120V-only source, or when inverting from the battery, there is no 240V between L1 and L2; in inverter mode it supplies 120V to both output legs, so 240V loads stop until a split-phase source returns.
What DC fuse and battery cable size does this model need?
Use the installation table in Victron’s current MultiPlus-II 2x120V manual, then confirm against local code, ambient temperature, cable construction, routing, and run length. At 12V, a 3,400W AC load draws roughly 300A or more from the battery, so short, heavy cables, a correctly rated DC fuse, and a battery bank rated for that continuous discharge current are essential.
What is the difference between AC-Out-1 and AC-Out-2?
AC-Out-1 is the inverter-backed output: if the AC source fails, the inverter takes over automatically after a brief transfer. AC-Out-2, rated 50A per leg, is for loads that should run only while shore, generator, or grid power is present; it disconnects on battery operation and reconnects after the AC source is back.
Can the 160A charger be configured for Epoch LiFePO4 batteries?
Yes. The charge profile must be configured for the exact battery or managed-BMS system rather than left on an unsuitable factory profile. Use VictronConnect or VEConfigure through a supported interface, and follow Epoch’s current charge-voltage, current-limit, temperature, and BMS-communication guidance for the battery bank.
Can I monitor and control this inverter from my phone?
Yes, with additional Victron hardware. A Cerbo GX or Ekrano GX enables system integration and VRM remote monitoring, and a VE.Bus Smart Dongle adds local Bluetooth monitoring and selected controls. An MK3-USB-C or MK3-USB interface and an RJ45 UTP cable are used for computer-based configuration and firmware updates.
Can this inverter be installed outdoors or in a wet compartment?
No. The unit is not weatherproof and must be installed in a dry, ventilated location. Do not install it in wet, dusty, explosive, or poorly ventilated spaces, and keep the clearance Victron’s manual requires around the enclosure.
