72V Lithium Batteries

72V Lithium Batteries

Unleash Maximum Performance with a Premium 72V Lithium Battery

A traditional 72-volt cart can require six heavy 12V lead-acid batteries wired in series. That creates a large battery bank, five inter-battery jumper cables, frequent watering and a long list of terminals that can loosen or corrode. Depending on the batteries used, the bank can weigh well over 400 pounds before trays and hold-downs are included.

Epoch replaces that complexity with a single 72V-class LiFePO4 power system. The current 70.4V 105Ah golf cart conversion kit stores 7.392kWh of energy in one 132-pound pack and provides 250A continuous discharge, 500A for 15 seconds and up to 1,000A for two seconds. That combination is engineered for compatible high-performance carts, lifted customs, electric utility vehicles and demanding Low-Speed Vehicle builds.

A 72 volt lithium golf cart battery does not create speed by itself, but lower weight, high current capability and a flatter voltage curve can help a correctly configured motor and controller deliver more consistent acceleration, hill-climbing response and performance. That makes the pack a strong high-performance golf cart battery for the right build. Actual speed and range depend on the complete vehicle, including controller programming, motor, gearing, tires, brakes, load and terrain.

“Drop-in” describes a simpler single-case conversion, not universal fitment. Before ordering a drop-in 72V lithium battery, verify the 21.7-inch by 13.4-inch by 9.9-inch case, 132-pound installed weight, M8 terminal layout, mounting clearance, controller limits, charger connection and accessory wiring.

The Ultimate Power-to-Weight Upgrade

Drivers looking to replace six 12V batteries with lithium gain more than a cleaner battery compartment:

  • Remove hundreds of pounds: A representative six-battery bank built from 85-pound 12V golf cart batteries weighs approximately 510 pounds. The Epoch 72V 105Ah pack weighs 132 pounds, creating a potential reduction of about 378 pounds before accounting for removed jumper cables and hardware. The exact savings depend on the original battery bank.
  • Improve power-to-weight ratio: Reducing mass can improve launch feel, hill response, braking load and suspension workload. Top speed may also change in some builds, but it is still limited by the motor, controller, gearing, tire diameter, programming and safe vehicle setup.
  • Eliminate five series jumpers: A native 72V lithium battery removes the inter-battery cables required by a six-battery series bank. The conversion still requires correctly sized main cables, fusing, disconnects, mounting, charger wiring, gauge wiring and accessory connections.
  • Maintain steadier voltage under load: Lead-acid voltage falls as the bank discharges and sags further during hard acceleration. LiFePO4 maintains a flatter discharge curve, helping the vehicle deliver more consistent power through most of the usable charge before the BMS reaches its low-voltage protection threshold.
  • Manage the complete pack with one BMS: The integrated high-voltage Battery Management System monitors the cells together and provides model-specific protection against overcharge, excessive discharge, overcurrent, short circuits and unsafe temperatures. It also supports compatible regenerative-braking events within the battery's published limits.

72V LiFePO4 vs. Lead-Acid Voltage Discharge Curve

The representative graph below illustrates the difference between Epoch's 70.4V-nominal LiFePO4 platform and a traditional 72V lead-acid bank. Lithium stays near its working voltage through most of the cycle, while lead-acid voltage declines progressively as stored capacity is used.

Representative 72V-class LiFePO4 and 72V lead-acid discharge curves A solid 70.4V nominal LiFePO4 curve settles from full-charge voltage and remains near the low 70-volt range through most of the discharge before dropping near empty. A dashed 72V lead-acid curve declines progressively from about 76 volts toward the low 60-volt range as capacity is used. 80 76 72 68 64 60 56 54 0 20 40 60 80 100 Capacity Used (%) Approximate Terminal Voltage (V) Common lead-acid planning point: about 50% used* 72V-Class LiFePO4 72V Lead-Acid Bank
Illustrative comparison under a moderate, steady load; this is not an Epoch product test. Actual voltage varies with battery design, current draw, temperature, age, wiring losses and BMS or controller cutoff settings. Epoch's current product is 70.4V nominal with a 55.0V to 79.2V operating range, while a conventional 72V lead-acid bank may use six 12V batteries in series. *The 50% marker is a common lead-acid system-planning guideline, not a universal hard cutoff.

Top Applications for 72-Volt Lithium Power

Aftermarket AC Motor and Controller Conversions

A Navitas 72V lithium battery build must be treated as a complete system, not a battery-only upgrade. Selected Navitas TAC2 controllers support 48V to 72V operation, but controller settings, motor demand, battery current, regenerative current, cable gauge and fuse protection must remain within the Epoch battery's published limits. SilverWolf systems vary by conversion, so confirm the exact voltage and controller requirements directly with the manufacturer. The amperage printed on a motor controller is not automatically the continuous current drawn from the battery.

This Epoch kit provides 250A maximum continuous discharge, 500A for 15 seconds and 1,000A for two seconds. Those ratings support demanding acceleration events in compatible builds, but no battery can guarantee a particular top speed or torque figure. After increasing vehicle performance, verify that the brakes, steering, tires, suspension and chassis are appropriate for the resulting speed and load.

Heavy-Duty LSVs, Passenger Carts and Utility Vehicles

A 72V LSV battery can support properly configured six-passenger people movers, lifted hunting carts, resort vehicles and commercial utility carts that carry heavier loads or climb steep grades. Higher system voltage can deliver a given power level at less current than a lower-voltage architecture, helping reduce resistive losses when the controller, motor and wiring are designed for 72V. Vehicle classification and road legality depend on the complete build and local law.

Custom EV and Marine Projects

Seventy-two-volt systems also appear in custom light electric vehicles, industrial equipment and selected electric-propulsion projects. The current Epoch collection product is designed primarily as a 72V lithium golf cart conversion kit; its voltage alone does not make it universally compatible with an ATV, marine motor or custom EV. Confirm the required operating range, current, communications, environmental rating, emergency disconnect and charging method with the equipment manufacturer and a qualified installer.

Why LiFePO4 Matters in a High-Voltage System

A 72V LiFePO4 battery uses lithium iron phosphate, a chemistry valued for strong thermal and chemical stability compared with many cobalt-based lithium-ion chemistries. No high-energy battery should be described as fireproof, and 72V DC can produce dangerous fault current. Proper mounting, insulated tools, correctly rated cables, a main fuse or breaker, a service disconnect and protection against accidental short circuits remain essential.

Epoch's advanced BMS monitors voltage, current and temperature while protecting the pack against defined fault conditions. The battery is also engineered to accept up to 100A continuous charge and up to 500A for 15 seconds during compatible regenerative events. Controller and regen settings must be configured so they do not exceed those limits.
