Dual-Output 12V & 36V Marine DC-to-DC Charger | Charge on the Run

Charge a separate 12V auxiliary battery and a 36V trolling-motor battery from one compatible 12V or 24V starter-battery system.

The Epoch 12V/36V DC-to-DC charger turns engine-run time into managed auxiliary charging across the boat. One independent 12V / 10A output supports a house or electronics battery, while a second 36V / 10A output charges a compatible trolling-motor battery. Automatic source-voltage sensing, selectable battery profiles, lithium BMS activation, IP67 construction, and compact onboard mounting simplify mixed-voltage marine power management.

The Ultimate “Charge on the Run” Power Manager

Use one starter-battery charging system to support both 12V auxiliary loads and 36V trolling power.

Modern bass boats can carry heavy 12V electronics loads and a high-capacity 36V trolling-motor battery. The CHG-DC-12V36V bridges those auxiliary systems to a compatible 12V or 24V starter-battery source without connecting the batteries directly together.

The input starter battery remains the source side. The 12V output is for a separate auxiliary or house battery; it should not be connected back to the same battery used as the charger input.

Dual Outputs: 12V and 36V Auxiliary Charging

The independent outputs provide 12V / 10A and 36V / 10A. Use the 12V bank for a separate electronics, house, or secondary battery and the 36V bank for a compatible trolling-motor battery.

Smart Voltage Sensing Without a Manual Trigger

A 12V source starts charging above 13.8V and stops below 13.0V. A 24V source starts above 26.8V and stops below 25.2V. Hibernation reduces idle activity while the charger continues monitoring source voltage.

Advanced Battery Profiles for Both Outputs

Each output supports LiFePO4, lead-acid, or AGM mode. Select the battery type before charging, and use the BMS activation function for a compatible sleeping lithium battery.

Harness Alternator Power for the Boat’s Auxiliary Systems

Supplement electronics and trolling-motor energy every time the source charging system is active.

With both outputs at full rating, the charger can provide approximately 120W to the 12V bank and 360W to the 36V bank—about 480W of aggregate nominal output before conversion losses.

That useful output also creates significant source-side demand, especially on a 12V system. Verify the outboard alternator or vehicle charging-system rating, starting-battery condition, existing electronics load, cable sizing, fuse protection, voltage drop, and available charging margin before commissioning.

Built for Demanding Marine Environments

Epoxy-filled ingress protection, active thermal management, and rigid onboard mounting.

IP67 Epoxy-Filled Enclosure

Pure epoxy filling gives the enclosure a high ingress-protection rating for correctly installed onboard use. Protect the leads, terminals, glands, and connections, and do not treat IP67 as permission for intentional or permanent submersion.

Aluminum Cooling with Waterproof Fan

This charger is not fanless. Its aluminum housing and bottom cooling plate work with a waterproof cooling fan. Maintain more than 30mm of clearance and never block the fan or heat-dissipation surfaces.

Compact, Secure Onboard Mounting

The 250 × 149 × 68mm enclosure uses 6.5mm mounting holes with M6 fasteners recommended. Secure the charger to a rigid surface and protect every lead from vibration, abrasion, heat, and sharp edges.

Clean Installation Without Networking Hubs

Three clearly defined connection groups: source input, 12V auxiliary output, and 36V auxiliary output.

The charger does not require a published NMEA 2000 or proprietary data network. Connect the input pair to the compatible starter-battery source, the 12V output pair to a separate 12V auxiliary battery, and the 36V output pair to the compatible trolling-motor battery.

This is a non-isolated charger. Red and black conductors within the same cable jacket must connect to the same battery, and a black lead must never be landed on a terminal carrying red leads. Follow the supplied wiring diagram exactly.

Alternator and marine installation note

Regulated charging does not remove the need to engineer the complete source and auxiliary circuits.

Verify source-system output, battery condition, fusing, cable ampacity, voltage drop, grounding, mounting, ventilation, chemistry settings, and auxiliary-battery limits. Disconnect and isolate all batteries before service. Never charge a frozen, damaged, or unsupported battery, and do not treat IP67 as permission for permanent submersion.

Source and wiring

Use a compatible 12V or 24V starter source. The charger is non-isolated, and a 36V battery is not supported as its input.

Visual compares published nominal output ratings and illustrates independent regulation. It is not a measured voltage/current/time charging curve. The two 10A figures are output-bank ratings; starter-side current varies with source voltage, battery demand, conversion efficiency, and operating conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Dual-Output 12V/36V DC-to-DC Charger FAQs

Common questions about both outputs, starter-battery reserve, alternator capacity, isolation, battery chemistry, cooling, and onboard mounting.

How does the dual-output 12V/36V “charge on the run” system work?

The charger draws from a compatible 12V or 24V starter-battery system and manages two separate auxiliary outputs: one 12V / 10A bank and one 36V / 10A bank. It monitors source voltage and begins charging when the source rises above the published engine-running threshold. This allows a separate 12V auxiliary battery and a 36V trolling-motor battery to receive regulated charging from one onboard unit.

Does the 12V output charge the same starter battery used as the input?

No. The starter battery or starter-battery system is the input source. The 12V output is intended for a separate 12V auxiliary, house, electronics, or secondary battery. Do not loop the 12V output back to the same battery used as the charger input.

Will the 36V output drain my starting battery while I am fishing?

The automatic voltage thresholds are designed to stop both auxiliary outputs when source voltage falls below the published cutoff. With a 12V source, charging starts above 13.8V and stops below 13.0V; with a 24V source, it starts above 26.8V and stops below 25.2V. The charger also hibernates after about 20 idle minutes while continuing to monitor source voltage. A healthy starter battery and properly sized alternator are still required.

Can I use a 24V starter-battery system as the charger input?

Yes. Epoch publishes a 13–30VDC input range for compatible 12V or 24V starter systems. A 36V battery is not supported as the input source. Verify the source system, polarity, fusing, grounding, and alternator capacity before installation.

Can I use the 36V output on three 12V batteries wired in series?

Epoch publishes the 36V output for one compatible 36V battery. A three-battery 12V series string may require individual-bank charging and balancing under the battery manufacturer's instructions. Do not assume that charging only across the full 36V string will keep all three 12V batteries balanced.

Does this replace my plug-in AC onboard charger?

No. The DC-to-DC charger supplements energy while the source charging system is active. Its outputs are limited to 12V / 10A and 36V / 10A, so a short engine run may replace only part of the energy used. A compatible AC onboard charger is still recommended for a complete dockside recharge and periodic balancing.

Will this charger protect every outboard alternator from overload?

The charger regulates its auxiliary outputs instead of connecting the battery banks directly, but universal alternator compatibility cannot be assumed. The two outputs represent up to approximately 480W of nominal charging power before conversion losses, so source-side current on a 12V system can be substantial. Verify alternator output, existing boat loads, cable size, fusing, voltage drop, and available charging margin.

Is this an isolated DC-to-DC charger?

No. Epoch lists the CHG-DC-12V36V as non-isolated. Automatic voltage sensing is not galvanic isolation. Connect every red and black pair exactly as shown in the supplied diagram, plan the common-ground architecture correctly, and use appropriate fusing and conductor protection.

Can each output charge lithium, AGM, or lead-acid batteries?

Yes. The 12V and 36V output banks each support selectable LiFePO4, lead-acid, and AGM modes. Use the MODE control for the applicable bank before charging. A bank's chemistry setting cannot be changed while it is charging; disconnect that bank's output ring terminals before selecting a different mode.

Is the charger fanless?

No. The charger uses an aluminum housing and bottom cooling plate together with a waterproof cooling fan. Maintain more than 30mm of clearance and keep the fan and heat-dissipation surfaces unobstructed.

Can I mount the charger in a wet bilge compartment?

The enclosure is epoxy-filled and rated IP67, but the ring terminals, cables, and connections still require protection. Do not intentionally submerge the charger. Mount it securely in a protected, ventilated location where the fan, glands, terminals, and wiring can be inspected.

Can it wake a deeply discharged lithium battery?

Yes, for a compatible sleeping LiFePO4 battery. Select LiFePO4 on the applicable output bank and hold its MODE button for approximately three seconds until the charging indicator responds. BMS activation cannot repair a damaged, frozen, or unsafe battery.

Can I charge a frozen LiFePO4 battery?

No. Do not charge LiFePO4 below 0°C / 32°F unless the battery has an approved internal heating system or its manufacturer specifically permits below-freezing charging. The charger's operating-temperature range does not override the battery's low-temperature charging limit.
